Series Chronology | |
Previous Season | Cycle 15 |
Next Season | Cycle 17 |
The sixteenth season of Sims' Next Top Model premiered in Decemer, 2017. This season, in contrast to many of the previous seasons, focuses on finding a model who does not necessarily fit the mould of a fashion model. For example, doors were opened up for girls who were too short, too tall, as well as too old according to most, in order to challenge beauty ideals.
This season is based in France, making it the third season not to take place in the United States, the first being cycle 5, which was based in South Korea, and the second being cycle 10 which was based in Australia.
The prizes this season are:
- A cover and spread in Vogue Paris.
- An international Max Factor Campaign
- A modelling contract with NU女 Models.
- A cash prize worth € 80,000.
Changes and twists
After the success of cycle 15, not many changes were made to this season. SaintPita alumna Yachana Vazirani, male model, photographer and host of brother show Sims' Next Top Male Model Maicle Gambardella, and RED Models Manager Sin Il Hong all returned as permanent judges.
Twists
- Top Model of the Week: Each week, a poll is opened following the weekly photo shoot in which the viewers get to vote for their favourite photo. Whoever receives the most votes wins immunity that week.
- Comeback: In the fourth week, the eliminated contestants returned and competed alongside the remaining contestants for a chance at re-entry into the competition.

161 | 1 | "The Girl Who Loved Bees" | 14 December 2017 |
The top 12 arrive at a countryside manor in Château-Gontier where Yachana throws them straight into a hectic, one-day boot camp. First of all, she examines their runway walks. For Nghĩa, the harsh start proves to be too rough, and she suffers a panic attack. In the end, Khonarh is crowned the best walker and receives immunity, securing her spot in the top 10. In a autumn themed photo shoot with male models, Emmanuelle struggles to create chemistry while Ysaunny fails to stay focused. In the end, they are both eliminated.
| |||
162 | 2 | "The Girl Who Dreaded Red" | 30 December 2017 |
The remaining girls make it to Paris, but are not given any time to rest as they are thrown straight into their next photo shoot. Afterwards, they finally get to unwind at their apartment, but this is cut short once Xiong and Abree realise there is one bed too little, and poorly organise a tournament to determine which girl is to be left without a bed. The next day the girls receive drastic makeovers, which are received well by most girls but Xiong. At elimination, the judges question Nghĩa's strength and capability of making it in the industry, and Ripsey's passion and drive. The two land in the bottom, and it is Ripsey who must leave.
| |||
163 | 3 | "The Girl Who Feared the Dark" | 7 May 2018 |
Yachana stops by the house to chat with Nghĩa about her insecurities. Later at their challenge, the models team up to try to sell Max Factor products in social media posts. Later, Khonarh and Ko get into an argument. When embodying common fears at the photo shoot, Joyce and Nghĩa struggle for doubting themselves to much, and in the end the latter gets the boot.
| |||
164 | 4 | "The Girl Who Got Revenge" | 22 May 2018 |
The eliminated girls return for a chance at re-entry into the competition as the show takes a vacation in Cape Verde. At the challenge, the eliminees judge the remaining models in a styling tournament, and ultimately Betty wins. As her prize, she and a friend gets to stay the night on the neighbouring island. The girls model holiday wear at the photo shoot and backstage during elimination, Khonarh, Nghĩa, Liv and Abree all get heated. Emmanuelle wins re-entry as she, Joyce and Ko receive best photo together. Awa finds herself in the bottom for failing to stand out, but it is Liv who is sent packing.
| |||
165 | 5 | "The Girl Who Travelled All Alone" | 23 July 2018 |
Back in Paris, the new top 8 go on go-sees to book jobs for the following week. At the photo shoot, they must create believable movie stills in a retro-futuristic shoot. At elimination it is revealed which clients booked which girls, and having attended all go-sees and booking all but one, Betty is deemed the challenge winner. Ko impresses and receives her third first call-out in a row, while Abree and Khonarh's lukewarm performances land them in the bottom two, with Abree's overall performance sending her home.
| |||
In their most stressful week yet, the seven remaining girls travel around the world for the jobs they booked, with two taking place outside of France. Awa and Khonarh reach their breaking points and have a massive falling-out, to the other girls' confusion. At elimination the girls are called out by the average score from 1-10 given to them by the clients. Joyce is called first with the highest average, while Betty and Emmanuelle find themselves in the bottom. In the end, Betty's score is higher and Emmanuelle is sent home again.
| |||
166 | 6 | "The Girl Who Was an Act" | 20 August 2018 |
The remaining girls have their acting skills tested by alumnas Erin Phoenix and Loretta Jerniwsky, and to their disappointment, most girls do a poor job. At the house, Awa and Khonarh's now tense relationship gets worse when both ruin one anothers belongings. Later, the girls visit the Louvre where they find out they are having a shoot recreating classic paintings hung there. At elimination, Joyce wins first call-out for a third time. Awa and Xiong, however, end up in the bottom two for overall weaker performance, and in the end, both are eliminated as the judges feel they won't be able to catch up to the rest in time.
| |||
167 | 7 | "The Girl Who Bit the Apple" | 12 September 2018 |
The final four travel to New York where they are sent into a photo shoot inspired by fashion illustrations right after their arrival. At their new apartment, Betty opens up to Joyce about her trouble with self-image and depression. Meanwhile, Khonarh tries to get on everyone's good side, but to no avail. The following day the models go to fittings for an S/S 19 preview event, where Ko gets on the client's nerve. Afterwards they have another photo shoot with a helicopter on the rooftop of their apartment building. The following day, the girls walk in the preview event, and Khonarh is deemed the client's favourite, earning her a spot in her NYFW show. At elimination, Joyce and Khonarh win first call-out together, while Betty and Ko land in the bottom by default. Yachana announces that no further elimination will take place before the finale.
